I’m going to show you how I get started with my tomato garden soil preparation for spring during winter and fall – no composting required, just eggshells and coffee grounds left over from your morning eggs and coffee!

I noticed that coffee grounds and eggshells are very good for tomatoes. Why? Because tomatoes crave calcium. Calcium makes tomato stems bulky and strong, and it makes tomatoes big and juicy. And eggshells are full of calcium! Coffee grounds contain heaps of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus – exactly what tomatoes need!

Step 1: Collect Eggshells And Coffee Grounds

I have a glass jar in my kitchen where I drop eggshells after using the yolks and egg whites, as well as coffee grounds after brewing my morning coffee for me and my husband.

When the jar gets full, which would be in about a couple days, I simply dig a hole in my tomato bed, drop it all in, and cover with soil.

By the time winter ends, and spring arrives, most of the eggs and coffee grounds would have decomposed, and leave all the wonderful nutrients behind!

And just in case the eggs and coffee grounds don’t decompose in time, I order red wriggler worms and fill my tomato beds with them. They will eat all the remaining compost and poop out castings full of nutritious proteins.
